The proposed project consists of the construction of a new 300 MWe CCGT power plant

The new CCGT (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine) plant will be located within the existing steel plant and, and after the planned wider modernization of the steel plant will utilise process off-gases from the coke ovens, converters, and blast furnaces. Natural gas will not be required for routine operation of the CCGT plant.

The collection and use of process off gases within the proposed CCGT will provide improvements in local air quality. The main advantages of the CCGT project are:

  • an overall reduction in electricity costs at the steelworks;
  • more effective use of blast furnace and coke oven process off-gases and reduce the flaring of converter gas;
  • increase of energy efficiency in terms of energy used per unit of steel production;
  • reduction in the volume and intensity of carbon dioxide emissions in terms of mass emissions per unit of steel production.

The construction of the CCGT is to be initiated in 2007 and is expected to be completed in 2009. The CCGT will be designed to meet all Ukrainian and EU environmental standards, inclusive of European Union Integrated Pollution, Prevention and Control ("IPPC") and Large Combustion Plant Directive ("LCDP") requirements.
